Before reading your message, opening your profile or seeing your work, people see your photo. It is a small, round image that appears on WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn and Google. In less than a second, they have already formed an opinion about you: whether you seem trustworthy, approachable and professional.
You cannot avoid that quick judgement. What you can do is choose a photo that says what you want it to say.
What your photo communicates without you realising
Some impressions are almost automatic:
- No photo: it suggests an abandoned or fake profile, or someone who does not want to be found. In a business conversation, it raises suspicion.
- A photo cropped from a group shot: someone else’s shoulder in the corner looks improvised, as if you did not have a photo of your own.
- Sunglasses or a distant face: hiding your eyes creates a barrier. People trust those they can look in the eye.
- A very old photo: when someone meets you in person and does not recognise you, their first feeling is that they were misled.
- A mirror selfie or a photo taken in the car: it works on a personal profile, but feels too casual when dealing with clients.
Personal and professional profiles call for different photos
If you use the same number for family and clients, your WhatsApp photo speaks to both audiences at once. In that case, choose the professional version: the people close to you already know you and will not judge you by your photo. People who do not know you yet will.
On LinkedIn and professional Instagram accounts, the rule is simpler: your photo should match what you offer. A lawyer, a doctor and a tattoo artist do not need the same photo, but all three need to look good at what they do.
How to choose a good profile photo
- Your face filling most of the circle. The photo appears tiny on most screens. Chest up usually works best.
- Light from the front. Light from a window works in most cases. Avoid standing with your back to the light, which darkens your face.
- A simple background. A plain wall, a blurred outdoor area or your own workplace, as long as it is tidy.
- Look at the camera. It creates a sense of direct contact with the viewer.
- A natural expression. A slight smile feels welcoming. Looking too serious can seem distant, and a forced smile always shows.
- A recent photo. If your hair, beard or style has changed a lot, it is time for a new one.
What about your business profile?
For brands, the profile photo is usually the logo. The most common mistake is using the full version, with the name and tagline, which becomes illegible inside the circle. Ideally, you should have a compact version of your logo designed for small spaces, with enough margin so it does not get cut off at the edges.
Businesses that depend on a person, such as medical practices, offices and self-employed professionals, often do better with a photo of the professional than with the logo. Clients want to know who they will be talking to.
Is a photo shoot worth it?
If you use your own image to sell, yes. A short shoot with a few changes of outfit and background gives you a profile photo plus images for your website, posts and printed materials. Spread over the time you will use them, the cost is much lower than it seems.
If that is not possible right now, a good phone, light from a window and someone to take the picture will already do better than the cropped selfie you are using today.
